2012 promises to be another eventful and challenging year. The slow pace of economic recovery will continue to place considerable pressures on public resources, which in turn will impact on the availability of services, including short breaks and respite care.
However we believe there are grounds to be optimistic.

There are an estimated 6.4 million people in the UK providing unpaid care and support to ill, frail and disabled friends and family members and money worries are a constant feature in their lives.

Local Authority Respite Care Provision 2010-11
The Scottish Government recently released the 2011 data for provision of respite in Local Authority areas across Scotland. The statistics are presented in "respite weeks provided or arranged by local authorities" and then further broken down into "respite nights" and "respite days" for three age groups: 0-17, 18-64 and 65+. Shared Care Scotland's summary paper pulls this information together to show Council by Council figures, and each Council's contribution towards the Scottish Government/COSLA target of an additional 10,000 weeks.

Getting the right break at the right time is a big priority for many carers. Short breaks help keep families together and can contribute to the health and wellbeing of everyone in the caring relationship.
As carers, you are being asked to take part in a Scotland-wide survey on carer’s short breaks. -
Successful Applicants to Short Break Fund Round 2 Announced
The Scottish Government has made the Short Breaks Fund* available to help support and sustain Scottish carers, including young carers and kinship carers, through enabling better access to short breaks or respite care. Now in its second year, the fund has supported more than 100 projects across Scotland to provide short breaks to more than 6,000 carers.

Carers who look after family or friends will qualify for free energy assistance help, backed by the Scottish Government.
People recieving Carer's Allowance will qualify for free energy assistance help, backed by the Scottish Government.
Depending on individual circumstances, the Energy Assistance Package may consist of but is not limited to:- Installation of a new central heating system including where appropriate air source heat pumps
- A new boiler
- Draughtproofing
- Internal or external wall insulation
- Cavity wall insulation
- Loft insulation
- Room thermostats and heating controls
- Insulation of tanks and pipes
The Regulation will come into force on November 30, 2011
