Join us at our online learning event on Thursday 24th April at 12pm where we will be hearing from Justina Murray, Chief Executive Officer, Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs (SFAD). Justina will be discussing unpaid carers who are affected by alcohol/drug use. SFAD are currently funded through Shared Care Scotland via our Creative Breaks funding to support their Routes project, supporting young carers in East and West Dunbartonshire. Routes was originally developed as a national demonstration project, recognising the lack of support for young people affected by someone else’s substance use, and the need for young people to co-design a new approach.
This project aim to provide day trips, activities and support for young carers to encourage friendships and reduce isolation while offering a crucial break from their caring responsibilities. At the heart of Routes is the principle of co-production, where young people actively participate in shaping the programme. In 2023, Routes received significant investment by the Scottish Government, allowing Scottish Families to work with third sector partners to establish the Routes programme in five other areas of Scotland, as well as sharing learning from the Routes model across the rest of the country.
Routes made the shortlist for the 2024 Charity Awards, the longest-running and most prestigious awards scheme in the charity sector. Routes were also shortlisted for the YouthLink Award in 2024, Recognising Skills & Achievement category, which they went on to win!
