Learning Exchange: Spotlight on Meeting Centres Scotland
Learning Exchange: Spotlight on Meeting Centres Scotland
On Wednesday 18 June, we were delighted to welcome Lorna and Dawn-Claire to our Learning Exchange series. They shared the inspiring work of Meeting Centres Scotland, a growing movement of community-based hubs supporting people living with dementia and their families.
Built around 11 Essential Features, Meeting Centres empower local communities to design support that reflects their needs and values. Their vision? A Meeting Centre in every community.
We also heard from Nataha, who shared her experiences as an unpaid carer and how she is now supporting others in a similar role.
Key takeaways:
-
Respite doesn’t always mean separation – Many carers prefer shared spaces where they and the person they care for can participate together. Activities like group walks or social clubs can ease stress without requiring time apart.
-
Collaboration is key – Meeting Centres are co-produced by the people who use them: carers, people with dementia, volunteers and staff.
-
Small things matter – A hand massage, a regular chess game — simple, everyday moments can offer connection and relief.
-
Local identity is vital – Centres are rooted in the communities they serve, often choosing their own names and locations, from cafés to arts venues to beachfront walks.
A huge thank you to Lorna, Dawn and Natasha for taking the time to share the inspiring work they do.
Our Learning Exchange series offers a space for shared learning, showcasing innovative short breaks practice and encouraging strategic thinking across the sector.
The series will return in September—stay tuned for more opportunities to connect, learn, and be inspired.
