Andrea's story: confidence through creative writing

As a single mum caring full‑time for her two boys, one with Autism and complex needs who cannot be left alone, Andrea spends every day juggling intense responsibilities that leave her with almost no time or space for herself. Unable to work and often confined to the home, the isolation builds, and the constant vigilance required in her caring role leaves her exhausted in both body and mind.

The emotional weight of doing everything alone, without breaks or much external support, has taken a toll on Andrea's mental wellbeing, stretching her thin and leaving her feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and worn down.

During support and conversations, it became clear that Andrea has a hidden passion for creative writing, story writing and illustrations.
With encouragement, Andrea applied for a Time to Live microgrant to enrol on a remote creative writing course.

“Writing gives me somewhere to place my thoughts, emotions, and stories that otherwise stay locked inside. As I started to learn and write, I was able to rediscover me, my imagination and my voice - the parts of me that often get set aside while I meet everyone else’s needs. Instead of feeling trapped at home, my mind could travel into stories, characters, and worlds of my own making. Creativity gave me the break I needed and didn’t know that I wanted, all without leaving the house”

"Writing gave me permission to rest mentally. For those moments, I was not just a carer but a creator, a storyteller, someone with dreams and and talent. These tiny pockets of time even helped me refill the energy that caring drains."
