Annabel's story: keeping fit and well

At just 19 years old, Annabel balances a great deal of responsibility in her day-to-day life. As a young adult carer, she plays a vital role in supporting her sister who has a neurological condition that affects both her speech and mobility. Alongside this, Annabel helps her mum around the house when she works and spends a couple of days each week supporting her aunt.

Despite her busy and caring role, Annabel recognised the importance of looking after her own wellbeing. During a conversation with her support worker, she spoke about her desire to keep fit and stay healthy. She had noticed that her local gym offered a range of exercise classes that she would really enjoy, but finding the time and money felt challenging.

With support, Annabel began to take regular, planned breaks to attend the gym. Having something scheduled just for herself gave her motivation. Even on days when the weather was poor, the gym provided a consistent and positive space where she could focus on her own needs. Annabel found that exercising not only improved her physical health but also had a noticeable impact on her mental wellbeing.

With thanks to a Time to Live microgrant, Annabel was able to purchase a year-long gym membership with unlimited access. This flexibility has been key, allowing her to attend sessions around her caring responsibilities and commitments at home.

“These regular breaks meant that I had something to look forward to and when I attended the classes, I met some new people. We also had a coffee a few times, so that was great to mix with other people and just chat and not have to talk too much about my situation at home.”

Over time, Annabel has built connections with others at the gym, creating a meaningful social circle. While keeping fit, these moments have provided her with a chance to relax, feel included, and enjoy conversations that are not centred on her caring role.
