Archie's story: more than just a games console

Archie helps care for his twin brothers, who both have Down syndrome. Like many young carers, he does not see himself as an unpaid carer. He simply sees the support he gives his family as part of everyday life. What Archie does not always realise is the huge positive impact his help has on his parents and brothers.

While attending a young carers' camp, Archie spoke about life at home and the ways he helps his mum, dad and brothers. During conversations about taking breaks from caring, he shared his love of gaming, particularly Minecraft-style games. It became clear that having something of his own and time to enjoy his interests would make a real difference to his wellbeing. With support from a Time to Live grant, Archie received a refurbished Xbox and a selection of games.

Having dedicated time to relax and recharge has helped Archie feel that he has something that is just for him. It has boosted his confidence, giving him something to talk about with his friends, and something he takes real pride in.

The Xbox has also had a positive impact on family life. It has strengthened the relationship between Archie and his brothers as they spend time together playing and watching games. It also provides valuable moments of respite for Mum, knowing the boys are engaged, happy and enjoying time together.

Archie's mum said:

"Thank you so much for recognising that Archie needed this support and some time for himself. Hearing the boys laughing together and enjoying the games is a real tonic for us all. Without the Time to Live grant, we simply would not have been able to purchase this for him."

This support has provided much more than a games console. It has given Archie the opportunity to relax, connect with friends, and enjoy being a child, while also creating special family moments that everyone can share.

"An Xbox for me, my very own! It's so much fun and I'm so pleased that I was able to get this. I sometimes let my brothers play, but they know it's for me to have time for myself. Although we have a good laugh when they're watching me play games."
