Bonnie's story: guinea pig companions
Bonnie is a young carer who provides support to both her brother, who has autism, and her mum who experiences mental health challenges. These responsibilities can have a significant impact on family life, but Bonnie never complains. She is always happy to help around the house and loves spending time in the garden playing with her brother.
When attending her local young carers' club, Bonnie was known for her caring nature and willingness to help others. During one club session, an animal organisation visited the group, and Bonnie quickly stood out with her enthusiasm and knowledge of animals. While chatting with her Carer Support Worker, Bonnie shared her dream of one day having her very own guinea pig to care for and spend time with.
Recognising how much this would mean to Bonnie, an application was made to Time to Live. With support from her mum, the funding was successfully awarded and used to purchase two guinea pigs, a hutch and essential supplies, including bedding and straw to help Bonnie get started on her new adventure as a pet owner.
Bonnie's mum said:
"Bonnie is such a caring little girl and she just loves animals and nature. I am sure that she will work with animals when she grows up. She is caring towards me as well as her brother. It's great to be able to show her that we appreciate all of her help."
The arrival of the guinea pigs has brought Bonnie immense happiness and given her some valuable time for herself away from her caring responsibilities.
"This is brilliant! Two guinea pigs so they can play together like me and my brother and have company in their hutch. I like to make sure they are comfy, warm and fed, and I can chatter away to them."
The Time to Live microgrant has not only helped Bonnie achieve her dream of owning guinea pigs, but has also provided her with companionship, relaxation, and the opportunity to enjoy being a child while continuing care for her family.
