Brenna’s story: building confidence through calligraphy
Brenna is a mum and full-time carer to her two children, both of whom have additional support needs. Her son has ADHD and autism, while her youngest daughter lives with epilepsy. As their primary carer, Brenna provides extensive physical and emotional support every day, helping with daily routines, personal care, supervision and managing their individual needs.
Caring for her children is a role she is deeply committed to, but it can be incredibly demanding. At times, her son will be awake through the night, meaning Brenna is also awake to care for him. The lack of sleep and constant responsibility frequently leave her exhausted, making everyday life a struggle and leaving little time for her own wellbeing.
During conversations with her Carer Support Worker, it became clear that Brenna was emotionally and physically drained and urgently needed opportunities to focus on herself. While discussing possible options for a break, Brenna explained that she was not keen on taking time away from home. The thought of leaving her children and arranging additional support felt stressful rather than restorative.
Instead, she spoke about a hobby she had once enjoyed but had gradually set aside because of her caring responsibilities: calligraphy. Recognising the importance of helping Brenna reconnect with something she loved, support was provided through Time to Live funding. Brenna used the funding to purchase a calligraphy set, workbook and a subscription to a flexible online learning course, allowing her to develop her skills in a way that fit around family life.
“Having good equipment and proper things to learn through the online sessions encouraged me to take breaks throughout the year. I could practice at times that were right for me and when things felt a bit calmer.”
Being able to learn and practice from home made a real difference. The flexibility meant Brenna could take short breaks when opportunities arose, without the pressure of leaving her children or organising additional care arrangements.
“This way, I had time at home to enjoy something for me. It’s helped my confidence and self-esteem, and I have really polished up my skills.”
Rediscovering a forgotten hobby gave Brenna much-needed time for herself and reignited a passion that had been lost amongst the demands of caring. The creative focus of calligraphy provided an outlet away from daily stresses and allowed her to spend time doing something purely for her own enjoyment.
