Callie’s story: making waves

Callie is a young, single mum caring for her 6-year-old son, Fraser, who has a rare neurological condition. Fraser requires full-time care and support as he is a wheelchair user, non-verbal, and visually impaired. Callie’s daughter, Julie, also plays an important role in supporting both her mum and brother with daily tasks.

Together, Callie and Julie share significant caring responsibilities, helping Fraser with all aspects of his care. With limited family support, Callie rarely gets a break and often feels guilty that much of her time and attention is focused on Fraser, meaning Julie sometimes misses out.

Both Callie and Julie are supported by their local carers' centre, with Julie also attending young carers' groups. During conversations, it emerged that they share a love of paddleboarding - an activity they both enjoy whenever Fraser is in respite care.

Encouraged to apply for a Time to Live microgrant, Callie explained that both she and Julie would benefit from a shared break. The grant enabled them to purchase a paddleboard and wetsuit each, as well as a block of practice sessions for Julie. This meant Julie could build her confidence and join others her age, while Callie could sometimes watch and relax, or join in and spend quality time on the water together.

Julie said:

“I love going paddleboarding with my mum. Now I have my own board and wetsuit, I can join in with other people my age and feel part of something. I’ve made new friends, which is great. I also love when my mum comes along, watching me and enjoying a coffee - it’s really special for both of us.”

This shared experience has given both Callie and Julie the chance to connect, have fun, and take a meaningful break from caring.

Callie and Julie’s story highlights the importance of flexible, personalised support for carers. The Time to Live microgrant enabled them to take a break in a way that suited their circumstances, creating opportunities for both shared experiences and individual growth.

“This grant has allowed us to enjoy time together doing something we both love. When we’re paddleboarding, we can forget about caring it’s fun, it’s freeing, and it’s our time together. I’m so grateful that we have this.”
