Camilla's story: rediscovering joy in repique drumming

Camilla is a parent carer to her two teenage sons. Her eldest son has autism, while her younger son has both autism and type 1 diabetes, which requires significant support and monitoring. Camilla helps her younger son manage his medication and daily health needs, while also supporting both boys with routines, completing tasks, and overcoming social challenges.

Both boys experience disrupted sleep patterns, social difficulties, and often need encouragement to leave the house and engage in activities. As a lone parent carer with no support from family or friends, Camilla manages her sons' differing needs on her own, often leaving little time to focus on herself.

During conversations about short breaks and self-care, Camilla's support worker suggested applying for a Time to Live microgrant. Through the grant, Camilla was able to purchase a repique drum, drumsticks, and a membership that included tuition sessions.

"I used to be part of a Brazilian samba band and I really loved it. It was a way for me to enjoy the company of others and lose myself in the music."

The grant allowed Camilla to reconnect with a passion that had once brought her joy and a sense of belonging. Returning to drumming gave her dedicated time away from her caring responsibilities and reconnected her with an important part of her culture. By attending lessons and practicing at home, Camilla was able to build regular breaks into her routine, giving her something positive to focus on for herself.

"This is an activity that I can learn and practise at home when I need a short break. I love music and find it very therapeutic."

Learning to play the repique drum again has become a valuable outlet for managing stress and improving her wellbeing. Thanks to the Time to Live grant, Camilla has been able to rediscover a passion that supports her wellbeing, strengthens her connection to her culture, while providing a meaningful break from the demands of caring. Through music, she is finding confidence and friendship.
