Caroline’s story: cooking up quality time

For more than 10 years, Caroline has been the main carer for her elderly mother, who lives with a neurological condition and memory loss. Alongside this, she also helps care for her two grandchildren. While her mother receives some homecare support, Caroline takes on most of the caring responsibilities herself, preferring to minimise the number of different people coming in and out of their home.

During a conversation with her support worker, Caroline spoke about her busy but rewarding life. Although caring takes up much of her time, she finds real enjoyment in her garden. Her mother and grandchildren also love spending time outdoors together, making the garden an important space for the whole family.

As it can be difficult for Caroline to leave home for a break, she applied for a Time to Live microgrant to help create opportunities for rest and relaxation at home. The grant enabled her to purchase a BBQ and a set of patio furniture, transforming her garden into a welcoming space where she could enjoy quality time with family and friends.

"It was great to get the BBQ and furniture, as I now have a space that we can all enjoy together. We eat outside when it's sunny and the kids can play while Mum and I spend some relaxing time together. Sometimes I sit out in the morning with a coffee and a book before everyone else is up. Those quiet moments are really special to me."

The new outdoor space has also made it easier to stay connected with others. Whether hosting friends, welcoming family members, or enjoying a simple meal together, the BBQ and patio furniture have helped create opportunities for socialising and making memories close to home.
