Catriona's story: building strength through the power of singing
Catriona is an unpaid carer supporting her father-in-law, who lives with dementia. Catriona also cares for her children, one of whom is autistic and non-verbal. Balancing multiple caring responsibilities can be demanding, leaving little time for her own wellbeing.
Through a Time to Live microgrant, Catriona was able to join a local choir and attend fortnightly singing sessions. The opportunity gave her valuable time away from her caring role, helped her build confidence, learn a new skill, and improve her physical and emotional wellbeing.
The impact of the sessions has been significant, and Catriona continues to attend as she believes the benefits have made a real difference to her overall health and quality of life.
“I have been a carer for my family members for many years and, throughout that time, have experienced different levels of stress. Being a carer often means putting your own needs aside. Over the years, I never felt I had the energy to try something new. This opportunity allowed me to do that without adding extra pressure, because even enjoyable activities can create anxiety when they disrupt an already demanding routine”
The choir is also very sociable, allowing Catriona to meet people with similar interests.
Through the simple act of singing, Catriona has found confidence, connection, and an important source of emotional support, helping her continue in her caring role while also taking care of herself.

“Music is important in our family too, and I often sing to my sons, who both enjoy it. This funding has given me the opportunity to try something new and enjoyable, and I can genuinely feel the positive impact it has had on my wellbeing.”
