Chester's story: time out on the lacrosse field
Chester, aged 13, is a young carer who plays an important role in supporting his family. He helps care for his mum, who has cerebral palsy, and supports his younger sister who has epilepsy. Alongside the demands of starting high school, Chester's days can be busy and sometimes challenging as he helps ensure his sister is safe and that his mum has everything she needs.
At home, Chester regularly assists with household tasks including cleaning, cooking and shopping. Despite his caring responsibilities, he continues to work hard at school and looks for opportunities to enjoy time for himself.
After starting high school, Chester joined a lunchtime lacrosse club with two of his friends. He quickly discovered a real passion for the sport and looked forward to the sessions each week. While speaking with his Young Carer Support Worker about the importance of taking breaks from caring, they discussed applying for a microgrant through the Time to Live fund to help him continue playing lacrosse outside of school.
The application was successful, allowing Chester to join his local lacrosse club. The funding covered the annual membership fee and enabled him to purchase essential equipment, including a lacrosse stick, mouthguard, gloves and helmet.
The Time to Live funding has helped Chester pursue a hobby, making it possible for him to enjoy regular breaks from his caring role. Through lacrosse, he has been able to build friendships, improve his confidence, and look forward to organised activities that are just for him.
Chester's mum shared what a difference the grant has made:
"Our money is pretty tight, so there isn't much available for treats or extra activities. It makes me smile to see Chester enjoying something that he wanted to take further after school. These breaks help him relax and give him a reward for all the hard work he does at home. The sessions are planned every fortnight, and we work together to make sure everything is in place so he can have the time out that he needs. The grant has really helped make that possible."
Thanks to the Time to Live fund, Chester can now step away from his caring responsibilities on a regular basis, enjoy a sport he loves, and spend valuable time with friends, helping him maintain a positive balance between caring for others and looking after his own wellbeing.
