Denise’s story: escape through art

Denise provides care for her husband, who experienced a stroke that resulted mobility challenges, chronic pain, and significant changes in his behaviour and personality. The emotional and physical demands of caring are considerable, and Denise shared that she often feels isolated, controlled, and distressed.

Despite this, Denise actively seeks ways to maintain her wellbeing. She regularly attends activity groups including Tai Chi, chair yoga, a book club, and an art group, which all offer her moments of connection, relaxation and time to herself.

She expressed that weekends can feel particularly lonely and difficult. To help address this, it was suggested she explore attending art workshops outside of the centre, giving her the opportunity to meet new people and engage in something uplifting and creative on her own terms.

Time to Live funding enabled Denise to attend three local art therapy workshops. These sessions provided her with a meaningful focus; a much-needed break from her caring responsibilities; and the chance to connect with other creative individuals in a supportive environment.

Denise said:

“I felt like a real artist for the afternoon, not just a wife or carer. It was a genuine escape, and I’m grateful for the funding as I couldn't afford something like this on my own. It felt special to have time where I could simply enjoy the moment.”
