Edward’s story: finding focus
Edward is a carer for his brother, who has severe mental health issues and has also had cancer. Thankfully, his brother is now in remission, but caring responsibilities remain a significant part of Edward’s daily life. Living in a remote area means the brothers spend much of their time together at home or on short walks nearby, as Edward can only leave his brother for limited periods.
As a hobby, Edward enjoyed walking and photographing local wildlife. Photography gave him a sense of freedom, relaxation and connection with nature, but over time caring responsibilities made it difficult to continue with his hobby.
After speaking with staff at his local carers' centre, Edward was encouraged to apply for a Time to Live microgrant. They recognised how important it would be for him to reconnect with an activity that brought him joy and offered a valuable break from his caring role. With the support of the grant, Edward was able to purchase a camera and tripod, giving him the opportunity to get back into photography both on walks and from the comfort of his garden.
“Because of the grant, I was able to buy a camera and a tripod so that I can use this at home in the garden as well. The walking has helped me become fitter, and I am really enjoying walking with and without my brother. The camera gives me the motivation to get out and try taking pictures, especially of birds.”
The grant has had a positive impact on Edward’s wellbeing. Having a reason to get outside more often has improved his physical health, while photography has given him something to focus on beyond his caring responsibilities.
The microgrant has enabled Edward to rediscover a hobby he thought he had lost, helping him build resilience, improve his wellbeing and enjoy some much-needed time for himself while continuing to provide invaluable support to his brother.

“It’s tough being a carer, but I don’t give up very easily. This has helped put a smile on my face and I feel great now that I have reconnected with photography, which I love.”
