Elizabeth’s story: iPad unlocking time
Elizabeth often describes her days as busy and hectic. As a parent of two children with additional support needs, much of her time is devoted to caring responsibilities. Although she has a very supportive husband, balancing family life can still be challenging, particularly in the evenings when finding time for herself feels difficult.
Through conversations with a local Rights and Engagement Officer, Elizabeth explored ways to create space for her own wellbeing. She shared that she had previously worked full-time but had stepped back from employment to care for her children. She also spoke about her love of learning and how much she missed having something that was just for her.
Further education was identified as a meaningful way for Elizabeth to relax and recharge. Having dedicated time to study gave her something to look forward to and helped her feel a sense of personal achievement. Alongside academic learning, she was also keen to build her understanding of her children’s conditions and the support available to them. This knowledge has helped her discover new, enjoyable ways to connect and engage with her children.
For Elizabeth, learning became both therapeutic and empowering. To support this, a Time to Live microgrant grant was used to purchase an iPad, allowing her the flexibility to study at a time and place that suited her busy routine.
“The iPad has made such a difference to me, not only for studying but also for spending quality time with my children. We use it together for baking, singing, and watching things."
As a result of this experience, Elizabeth feels more confident about seeking additional help and exploring further support options for her family.
