Esme's story: running into the future

Esme is a 15-year-old young carer, supporting her mother who lives with complex health conditions and agoraphobia. Spending much of their time at home together, Esme plays an important role in helping her mum with day-to-day life and supporting the running of the household.

Despite the challenges they face, Esme and her mum have a close relationship and work well together. However, balancing caring responsibilities, schoolwork and home life can often leave Esme feeling tired. Esme's mum is keen to ensure that caring does not prevent her daughter from pursuing her own interests and ambitions. She actively encourages Esme to focus on her studies and attend after school activities whenever possible, knowing how much they mean to her.

"Esme helps so much, and I feel guilty that she has to do so much. She never complains, but I know she really enjoys sports and spending time with her friends whenever she can."

While talking with her Young Carers Support Worker, Esme spoke about her passion for running. Every Thursday, she attends a local running club, where she enjoys the freedom of being outdoors, improving her fitness, and spending time with friends. Esme also shared her hopes for the future and her ambition to go to college and one day become a P.E. teacher.

Recognising how important running was to Esme's wellbeing, confidence and future aspirations, her support worker encouraged her to apply for a Time to Live microgrant. With support from her mum, Esme successfully applied for funding to purchase a good pair of running trainers and some running clothing.

"Choosing a good pair of running trainers and some new running leggings and tops was amazing. It's given me a real confidence boost, not only at running club with my friends, but at home too. When Mum is settled, I can get out for a run, clear my head and have some time for myself. It's been great for me to be able to do that."

The grant has enabled Esme to take regular breaks from her caring role while supporting her physical and mental wellbeing. Running has become an important way for her to manage stress, build confidence and focus on her own goals. It has also strengthened the bond between Esme and her mum, who enjoys helping her daughter plan running routes and celebrate her progress.

For Esme, the Time to Live microgrant has been about much more than running equipment. It has given her the opportunity to invest in herself, build healthy routines, spend time with friends and work towards her dream of a future career in physical education.

"Mum helps me plan some of my routes and times me when I'm out running. It's great to see her involved, and I know she loves seeing me getting out and about. Thanks to this grant, that's been possible."
