Euan's story: Glasgow getaway
Euan provides ongoing support for several members of his family. At home, he helps care for his father who lives with a heart condition, his elderly grandfather who has dementia, and his sibling who is autistic and non-verbal.
Balancing the needs of three family members can be demanding, and Euan often places the needs of others before his own. He explained that it can be difficult to recognise when he is becoming overwhelmed, only realising the impact of his caring role when he is already feeling exhausted, stressed and close to burnout.
Taking a break is not always straightforward. For Euan, stepping away from his caring responsibilities requires significant planning and organisation, which often means putting off the idea of a break altogether. Recognising the importance of taking time for himself, Euan applied for a Time to Live microgrant. The grant enabled him to take a two-night short break in Glasgow, giving him the opportunity to step away from his usual routine and focus on his own wellbeing.
During his break, Euan spent time doing things he enjoyed, including visiting art galleries, exploring the city, shopping and eating out. The change of scenery and freedom from day-to-day caring responsibilities allowed him to relax, unwind and reconnect with himself.
"This short break has helped me relax, recharge and reconnect with myself. I have come back with new energy and feeling much happier."
For Euan, the break came at exactly the right time. Having the opportunity to step away from his caring role, even for a few days, gave him the chance to rest both physically and emotionally. The experience also helped Euan reflect on the importance of self-care and the risks of neglecting his own wellbeing while caring for others. Taking a planned break reminded him that caring sustainably means recognising when support is needed and making time to recharge before reaching exhaustion.

"It's hectic at home and difficult for me to think about taking time completely away. However, the support of the carers' centre and the Time to Live grant made this possible. It's been a brilliant break for me at exactly the right time."
