Eva's story: murder mystery retreat

Eva is a full‑time unpaid carer for her adult son, who lives with a severe learning and developmental disabilities. He needs support with every part of daily life and cannot be left on his own. When outside the home, he requires constant supervision to keep him safe.

As his sole carer, Eva rarely has any time for herself. Her world has become very small, and with no real social circle beyond a few close friends and family members, she often feels isolated.

Thanks to some arranged respite, Eva was able to use a Time to Live microgrant to do something unusual - a weekend away with close friends on a murder mystery break.

Since the break, Eva has began accepting more support from her local carers' centre. She is now getting involved in groups, connecting with others, and making full use of the help, advice and community available to her. What started as a small break has opened the door to greater confidence, connection, and wellbeing.

“Knowing my son was safe and being well cared for meant I could truly switch off. It gave me a complete rest from my everyday life. I felt able to breathe, laugh, and simply enjoy the break."
