Fatima's story: striking the right chord

Fatima is a young adult carer for her grandparent, who lives with Alzheimer's disease. She also provides support to her mum, who experiences anxiety and other mental health challenges. While there is support in place for the family, Fatima often takes on additional responsibilities at home to help things run smoothly.

Recently, Fatima has been working hard towards securing a place at university. Balancing her studies, future and caring responsibilities has meant that finding time for herself has sometimes been difficult. Like many young adult carers, her own wellbeing can often take a back seat to the needs of those around her.

During a conversation with her Carer Support Practitioner, Fatima spoke about her love of music. She enjoys listening to her favourite artists and had always wanted to learn how to play the guitar. Together they explored ways of supporting her wellbeing and helping her take meaningful breaks from her caring role.

With the support of a Time to Live microgrant, Fatima was able to purchase a good-quality intermediate guitar, along with a chord guide, practice book and guitar picks, giving her everything she needed to begin her musical journey.

"I was so excited to learn that I could use a microgrant to buy a guitar. I can take time in my room and learn to play while listening to my favourite bands. It's been a great thing for me to focus on and learn, giving me the headspace to relax."

Having her own guitar has given Fatima a positive outlet and a dedicated activity that is entirely her own. Learning a new skill has helped her build confidence, focus on her personal goals and create valuable time away from the pressures of caring. Music provides an opportunity to relax, reduce stress and express herself creatively, helping to support her overall wellbeing.

As Fatima prepares to start university, the guitar will continue to play an important role in her life. She is excited about the opportunity to join music clubs and societies, develop her skills further and meet new people who share her interests. Having her own guitar means she can continue practicing, learning and enjoying music both at home and as she moves into this new chapter of her life.

"Thank you again. It was nice to be recognised for everything that I do at home, and to be able to have something just for me means a lot."
