Fay's story: a colourful break from caring
Fay is a young adult carer currently making the transition from high school to college. Alongside preparing for this exciting next step in her education, she provides vital support to her family at home.
Fay helps care for her sister, who has cerebral palsy and requires additional support with day-to-day activities. She also supports her dad, who lives with a degenerative heart condition, while helping her mum manage the demands of caring for the family. Balancing these responsibilities can be challenging, particularly while planning for her own future.
Despite her caring role, Fay has always been passionate about beauty and makeup. She hopes to study beauty therapy at college and has developed a particular interest in professional makeup application. She loves experimenting with different colours, styles and techniques, and enjoys using makeup as a creative outlet where she can express herself and build her confidence.
To help her develop her skills and confidence, Fay applied for a microgrant to fund a series of professional makeup tuition sessions. The sessions provided her with expert guidance, practical experience and the opportunity to learn techniques used within the beauty industry.
"I've always loved makeup and beauty, but I never had the chance to learn from a professional before. Having these lessons has been amazing because I've been able to develop skills that will help me when I start college and work towards a career that I'm really excited about."
Through the sessions, Fay learned a range of professional techniques, explored different styles of makeup application and developed a greater understanding of the beauty industry. Being able to experiment with bold colours, creative looks and new application techniques allowed her to expand her skills and discover new ways to express her creativity.
"I love trying different colours and techniques and seeing how many different looks I can create. The lessons have taught me so much and given me the confidence to try things I wouldn't have attempted before."

"Being a carer means that a lot of my time is spent thinking about other people. The makeup sessions gave me something that was just for me. I looked forward to them every week, and they reminded me that it's important to have my own goals too."
