Frank and Rena's story: a picnic hamper full of memories

Frank and Rena are kinship carers for their three grandchildren. Their youngest grandchild has a rare genetic disorder, while the oldest lives with ADHD and a learning disability. Together, Frank and Rena devote their time to ensuring the children are well cared for, attending school regularly, and taking part in the clubs and activities they enjoy.

Life is often busy and demanding. Between appointments, school commitments, and meeting the children's individual needs, there is little opportunity for Frank and Rena to enjoy a break or spend quality time together as a family. School holidays can be particularly challenging, bringing additional pressures and the need to find affordable activities to keep everyone engaged.

As the summer holidays approached, both Frank and Rena worried about how they would keep the children entertained, while managing on a limited budget.

"We enjoy caring for our grandchildren," said Frank. "but sometimes the children's complex needs take their toll on both of us, and family life can be quite chaotic. School holidays are particularly stressful because there is so much to think about and organise."

Although support was already in place for the children, during a conversation with their social worker they were encouraged to apply to the Time to Live fund for support to take a break from their caring responsibilities. Frank and Rena applied and were delighted when their application was successful. Through the grant, they were able to purchase a picnic hamper and blanket, while the carers' centre also provided the family with tickets to Edinburgh Zoo, giving them the opportunity to enjoy a special day out together.

"The support was overwhelming. We received tickets to Edinburgh Zoo, as well as a picnic hamper and blanket, which was just lovely. We packed up the car and headed off for the day with all the food and snacks we needed. The children had an amazing time. Thank you for the grant. It has really helped our family."

The day trip gave the family an opportunity to step away from everyday routines, enjoy new experiences together, and create happy memories that will last for years to come.

The benefits of the grant did not end there. The picnic hamper and blanket have continued to bring enjoyment long after their visit to the zoo, providing opportunities for family fun both at home and on future outings.
