Frankie’s Story: Cinema Breaks & Stronger Bonds
Frankie is a young carer, supporting their dad who lives with depression, anxiety, and other health conditions. Day to day, Frankie takes on significant responsibilities including managing the household, helping with medication, and ensuring their dad is cared for.
While Frankie loves their dad deeply, the weight of these responsibilities can feel overwhelming. At times, they experience feelings of resentment, wishing they could focus more on their own life. This often brings tension and strain to their relationship, which can leave Frankie feeling guilty. They know it isn’t their dad’s fault, but it’s hard not to feel like their own life is on hold.
During conversations with their support worker, Frankie shared their passion for films. Watching movies had always been something Frankie and their dad enjoyed together - a rare space where they could relax and connect. Frankie especially loved going to the cinema, but with limited finances, it wasn’t something that could be prioritised.
After applying for Time to Live funding, Frankie was able to purchase CinePass Unlimited. This gave them the chance to access regular breaks from the pressures of home life and small, yet meaningful, opportunities of time to rest.
These moments of escape have made a positive difference not only for Frankie, but for their relationship with their dad.
“It’s helped my relationship with Dad because we can talk about films, we’ve always loved that. I think he’s happy that I can get this time for myself. Often, we start by talking about the film, but then we talk about other things too. We both realise we are people as well as carer and cared-for. Communicating really helps us both.”
Time to Live support has given Frankie more than cinema access. It has provided balance, independence, and emotional relief. Regular breaks from caring help Frankie manage responsibilities while looking after their own wellbeing, reducing stress and strengthening the relationship with their dad through better communication and shared moments.

“I love the cinema. It’s a break for me. I can just watch the film and not think about anything at home. I can plan these breaks around caring and home life without the worry of cost.”
