Freya's story - finding freedom through fashion

Freya is a young carer, looking after her mum who lives with a physical disability and hearing loss. Caring for her mum can be stressful, and Freya often worries about her mum's health.

Freya receives support at school and attends a young carers' group, which provides a safe space to connect with others in similar situations. Through these conversations, the link worker learned about Freya’s passion for fashion and her dream of, one day, becoming a designer. She already had a sewing machine but wanted to develop her skills further.

Freya applied for a Time to Live grant, which allowed her to attend sewing classes and purchase materials. This opportunity gave Freya the chance to focus on something she loves.

The experience not only boosted Freya’s confidence but also gave her a much-needed break from caring responsibilities, and a chance to recharge and nurture her creativity.

“I really enjoyed the sewing lessons and made some lovely things. The lessons gave me the confidence and skills to start using my sewing machine at home to practice. Having this time to myself helped me to relax and not worry as much.”
