Gary’s story: back on track
Gary is a dedicated carer for his partner, who lives with Crohn’s disease and arthritis. Caring involves significant responsibility, from providing personal care and managing medication to ensuring that no medical appointments are missed. While Gary does his best to take short breaks when he can, he often feels overwhelmed and hasn’t had a proper rest for quite some time.
After speaking with his local carers' centre, Gary opened up about how isolated and exhausted he had been feeling. During the conversation, he shared his passion for motorbikes - something that brings him joy. Although he tries to get out on his bike for an hour each week and spends time maintaining it when possible; he longed for a more meaningful break. He mentioned his wish to attend the Superbike Rally and was encouraged to apply for a Time to Live microgrant.
With the support of the grant, Gary was able to book a 3-day trip to the British Superbike Rally, including camping. With additional reassurance and encouragement to take time away from his partner, Gary finally took the break he had been thinking about for so long.
The Time to Live microgrant gave Gary the opportunity and confidence to step away from his caring role and prioritise his own wellbeing. It enabled him to reconnect with his passion, reduce stress, and return feeling refreshed, better able to continue in his vital caring role.
