Gemma's story: a swing chair, a splash pool, and a chance to breathe

Gemma is the primary carer for her three children, all of whom are neurodivergent. She provides constant practical and emotional support, managing complex needs and challenging behaviours daily. The demands of her caring role are significant, and with her children often struggling to settle at night and rarely sleeping through; Gemma frequently finds herself running on very little rest.

The lack of sleep, combined with the responsibilities of caring for three children, can leave her feeling physically exhausted, emotionally drained and overwhelmed.

With support from a Time to Live microgrant, Gemma was able to purchase a garden swing chair for herself and a splash pool for her children. Having access to a garden for the first time opened new opportunities for the family to spend time outdoors together, and these items have helped them make the most of that space.

"We have a garden now, so being able to use this space has been amazing for me. I can relax in the swing chair and read while the kids enjoy the splash pool. It means we can spend time together, with me relaxing and them burning off excess energy."

Having suitable outdoor equipment at home provides a safe, accessible and familiar environment for the children to play in. Gemma has also noticed the positive impact that spending time outdoors has on her children's wellbeing.

For Gemma, the swing chair offers something equally important: a chance to pause. Whether enjoying a quiet moment with a book or simply sitting in the garden while her children play nearby, she now has a comfortable space where she can take short but meaningful breaks throughout the day.

The microgrant has enabled Gemma to create a space that works for the whole family. A place where her children can play, explore and be active, while she can enjoy moments of rest and recharge, knowing they are safe and happy nearby.
