Grace's story: rebalance and sunshine on Bute

Grace is the main carer for her elderly mum, who lives with dementia and mobility challenges. Grace also cares for her dad, who is increasingly frail. Her days revolve almost entirely around their needs. After making the move to work from home to provide care for her parents, the pressure grew heavier, leaving Grace feeling exhausted, isolated, and with little time for herself or her partner.

Through support for her caring role, Grace was able to use a Time to Live microgrant to take a much‑needed, three‑night break with her partner at a hotel in Rothesay on the Isle of Bute.

“The trip was wonderful. We truly loved having three days just for ourselves. We explored on foot and by bike every day, walking through remote, rugged landscapes and soaking up the peace and quiet. The weather was fantastic too, which helped clear my head and made me feel fitter and lighter.”

What made the biggest difference to Grace was the freedom from routine:

“Not having to watch the clock or plan everything around Mum and Dad’s daily needs made this break so special. Being able to do things without endless planning was a real joy.”

“It really helped us reconnect as a couple. We talked, laughed, and remembered that we matter too. Without the grant, the support, and the encouragement from the carers' centre, I would never have taken this break. I’m so grateful.”
