Harold’s story: back on course

Harold provides care and support for both his partner, who lives with a long-term health condition, and his adult son, who has learning disabilities. Balancing the needs of two members of his family means that much of Harold's time is spent putting others first, often leaving little opportunity to focus on his own wellbeing. With so much of his energy devoted to supporting others, opportunities to relax, pursue his own interests or simply take a break from his responsibilities were becoming increasingly limited.

Through a Time to Live grant, Harold was able to take a three-night golfing break with a close friend. Golf had always been something he enjoyed, but caring responsibilities meant he rarely had the chance to spend time on the course as often as he would have liked.

Importantly, replacement care and support were arranged for his partner and son, allowing Harold to step away knowing that they were safe and well cared for.

"I was able to get away for a three-night break, a total break away from home and the usual responsibilities. I had some support in place with replacement care for my partner and son, so this helped me relax and tune out for the break."

For Harold, the time away offered much more than an opportunity to play golf. It gave him the space to switch off from caring responsibilities, spend time outdoors and reconnect with a friend. Away from the routines and pressures of daily life, he was able to focus on himself for a change. The break provided an opportunity to rest, reflect and process everything that had been happening within his family. Having uninterrupted time away helped reduce stress and gave him the emotional space needed to recharge during a particularly difficult period.

When he returned home, Harold felt refreshed, more positive and better able to cope with the demands of his caring role. The break helped restore his energy and resilience, allowing him to continue supporting both his partner and son with renewed confidence.

"Playing golf and having the freedom to walk and talk with my friend...meant that I had time for myself. This all made such a difference to me, and I felt refreshed when I went home, ready to tackle what I needed to."
