Harper's story: joy in every dance move

Harper is a young carer who has significant responsibilities at home, supporting her brother who has complex disabilities and additional health needs. She plays an active role in his daily care, helping organise his medication each morning, assisting with his breakfast before school, and staying close by throughout the day to support him whenever needed.

Life at home can be busy and often challenging. Both of Harper’s parents have given up employment to care for her brother and meet the wider needs of the family. Her brother frequently experiences periods of illness that require hospital admissions, sometimes leading to one or both parents being away from home for extended periods. During these times, Harper faces increased worry and emotional strain. She misses her parents deeply while also taking on additional responsibilities at home.

Due to the family’s financial circumstances, there is very little disposable income. During a conversation with her Carer Support Worker, Harper shared her love of dancing, especially Irish dancing. She spoke about how much she loved the dresses and shoes, and how she wished she could attend a weekly after-school dance group.

With support from a Time to Live microgrant, Harper was able to access this opportunity. Funding helped cover the cost of sessions over 12 weeks, as well as a dress and a pair of dance shoes so that she could fully participate alongside her peers. With the support of her dad who took her to the sessions each week, Harper was able to take part in something just for herself.

The impact was clear. Harper thrived in the group, forming friendships, building confidence, and enjoying a much-needed break from her caring role. This opportunity gave Harper not only time to enjoy being a child but also a positive outlet for expression, confidence, and connection something that made a meaningful difference to her wellbeing.

“I had such a great time with my friends, it was brilliant. I loved the dress and the music, thank you! Each week, I got so excited to go dancing. I even practiced at home and showed my brother the dances I was learning.”
