Henry’s story: digital companion

Henry is a full-time carer for his wife, Sandra, who uses a wheelchair and lives with multiple long-term health conditions. The couple live in a small rural village and enjoy spending much of their time at home and tending to their garden together.

As Sandra's health needs increased, travelling became more difficult, meaning much of their time was spent at home. During conversations with his local carer support service, Henry shared that having some time for himself to relax and unwind could help support his wellbeing alongside his caring role.

With support, Henry applied for a Time to Live microgrant and was able to purchase a digital radio. The radio has made a positive difference to both Henry and Sandra. They enjoy listening to music together and tuning in to their favourite radio programmes, creating a calm atmosphere in their home. Whether they are sitting in the garden or relaxing indoors, the radio helps them stay connected to the wider world through news, entertainment and current affairs.

"The radio has been great for us both to enjoy time together with music and shows. For me, with the radio on, I feel like I have a companion throughout the day. I can get regular sports updates and news, as well as horse racing coverage, which is something I'm very interested in. I can listen to these when Sandra is resting."

The digital radio has become much more than an entertainment device. It provides connection, companionship and access to interests that are important to Henry. It has helped reduce feelings of isolation, maintain hobbies and interests, and create valuable moments of relaxation within his caring journey. What started as a simple purchase through a microgrant has become a meaningful source of companionship, enjoyment and wellbeing for both Henry and Sandra.

"I love all sports and music, and the news updates help keep me up to date. My granddaughter has also helped me connect to podcasts, and they've been brilliant. I can listen and relax in a way that suits me while being comfortable at home."
