Isabella’s story: family memories made at Flamingo Land

Isabella is an unpaid carer whose daily life is centred around supporting her family. She provides significant care for her sons, one who has autism spectrum disorder and ADHD, and the other who is autistic and non-verbal. She also cares for her elderly grandmother, who is frail and requires ongoing support.

Balancing the needs of three family members with very different care requirements is both physically and emotionally demanding. Much of her time is spent managing routines, appointments, communication needs and day-to-day challenges. This leaves little opportunity to step away from her caring responsibilities or enjoy quality time together as a family.

With encouragement from her social worker, a Time to Live microgrant helped fund a trip to Flamingo Land. The funding helped remove financial barriers that might otherwise have prevented the trip from taking place, allowing the family to focus on spending time together and creating positive memories.

"I chose Flamingo Land because of the variety of activities available. With access to the theme park, zoo and swimming facilities, there was something for everyone to enjoy, regardless of age or individual needs. This ensured that each family member could participate in the experience in a way that suited them"

For Isabella, one of the greatest benefits of the grant was the relief from financial pressure. Knowing that some of the costs had been covered meant she could fully relax and enjoy the experience without worrying about the financial budget.

The break offered much-needed respite from the demands of daily life. Away from home and the usual routines, the family had the opportunity to connect, have fun and enjoy each other's company in a relaxed environment. Perhaps the most meaningful aspect of the trip was the opportunity for three generations of the family to spend quality time together. Her grandmother was able to be part of the experience, something that held special significance for everyone involved.

For the family, the break provided much more than a trip away. It reduced stress, strengthened family relationships and allowed everyone to enjoy positive shared experiences away from the pressures of everyday life. The grant enabled them to focus on what matters most: being together, having fun and making memories that will be treasured for years to come.
