Jay's story: creating calm through wooden model kits
Jay cares for his older brother, who lives with an acquired brain injury and physical disabilities. Jay also has autism, which means that the challenges of caring can impact his own health and wellbeing. The family live together with their elderly parents and, while they support one another where possible, Jay takes on most of the caring responsibilities.
During a recent discussion with his Carer Support Worker as part of his Adult Carer Support Plan (ACSP), they explored the importance of short breaks and activities that help Jay relax and recharge. When asked what he enjoys doing in his spare time, Jay explained that he loves building wooden models. The hobby provides structure and focus, helping him concentrate on a single task and take time for himself away from his caring role.
Jay applied for a Time to Live microgrant and used the funding to purchase several wooden model kits. As a keen locomotive enthusiast, he was especially excited to buy a large steam locomotive model that he had always wanted to build.
"I wanted to have a large steam locomotive kit, and I was so excited to get started. I enjoy model making; it's something that I can do at home and sit with my brother while he watches a film. I can focus on my model kit, helping me concentrate and spend time carefully working on something that I will be able to keep when it's finished."
The wooden model kits have provided Jay with an important way to relax, reduce stress and take a meaningful break from his caring responsibilities. The models offer a structured and engaging activity that supports his autism by helping him focus and enjoy a sense of achievement as each stage is completed.
The microgrant made it possible for Jay to access a hobby that supports his wellbeing, giving him dedicated time for himself while still being able to remain close to his family and continue in his caring role.

"Thank you for the grant. It means that I can have a few kits that I can do at home, and that's how I like to spend time relaxing. It's brilliant."
