John's story: creating calm close to home
John cares for his wife Cathy, who lives with dementia and cannot be left alone for any length of time. This makes it difficult for him to leave the house, even for short periods of time. Gardening has always been a passion, and he dreamed of creating a space where they could both enjoy nature while staying close together.
Applying for a Time to Live microgrant, John purchased a greenhouse, seeds, plants and some tools. The greenhouse is positioned right outside the back door, allowing him to step outside for periods as his caring duties allow.
“I’m a keen gardener and having this respite time at home gives me the chance to do something I love, while knowing Cathy is safe and nearby. When the weather improves, we’ll enjoy the garden together.”
This simple addition has boosted John’s morale and given him a sense of peace and purpose. John’s garden is not just a hobby; it’s a lifeline for his wellbeing, allowing time to recharge while remaining close to Cathy.

“The greenhouse is now up and running, and it brings me so much joy. I’ve started flower and vegetable seeds, and I’m growing plants to gift to friends. Thank you - this grant means the world to me.”
