Judy’s story: space to heal

Judy cares for her elderly father, who lives with mobility issues and several ongoing health conditions. Her role is wide-ranging and demanding, supporting him with medication, shopping, attending medical appointments, and providing reassurance, as well as some personal care. Being on call so often meant that Judy was constantly balancing responsibilities, which gradually began to take a toll on both her physical and mental health.

During a support conversation with her local carers' centre, Judy shared her interest in alternative therapies. She reflected on how, before her caring responsibilities increased, she regularly attended yoga and meditation sessions activities that helped her feel balanced and supported.

Together, it was agreed that Judy would benefit from using a Time to Live microgrant to attend a Transcendental Meditation course. This opportunity would allow her to reconnect with practices she valued, while learning new techniques to support her wellbeing.

With support from her uncle, who stepped in to care for her father during her time away, Judy was able to fully take part in the course. The microgrant covered the cost of the course, accommodation, travel, and food, making it possible for her to have a meaningful break.

“I was overwhelmed by the grant that was awarded. It meant I could have a proper break away. Being recognised in this way and having a break that wasn’t a traditional one made me feel heard. It allowed me to be creative and choose something that truly meant the most to me.”

The Time to Live microgrant gave Judy the opportunity to step away from the pressures of her caring role and focus on her own wellbeing in a meaningful way. By reconnecting with practices that support her mental and physical health, she has gained valuable tools to help manage stress and sustain her caring responsibilities. This break not only allowed her to rest and recharge but also helped her feel recognised, listened to, and valued.
