Lauren’s story: making memories together

Lauren is a devoted mum caring for her two children, who are awaiting assessment and diagnosis for Autism. The daily challenges they face managing routines, sensory needs, uncertainties, and emotional ups-and-downs have taken a toll on Lauren's own wellbeing.

Between work, caring, and constant worry, Lauren and her partner were feeling overwhelmed. Money was tight, stress was high, and finding quality time as a family was becoming harder. When Lauren spoke with her local carers' centre about breaks and support, she shared something important: if she were to take a break, she wanted her children and partner with her. They are a very close family, and she felt that spending meaningful time together time filled with calm, fun, and connection would help all of them cope with the challenges they were facing. Making memories mattered more to her than getting time alone.

With the help of a Time to Live microgrant, Lauren arranged a family day out - something simple, joyful, and free from the pressure of costs. The day included a trip to a bowling alley, snacks, and a meal together afterwards.

For one day, worries about money and every day stress were replaced with laughter, fun, and the joy of just being together.

This small break gave Lauren, her partner and children something precious: time to connect, breathe, and create memories that continue to lift them through difficult days. It reminded them that even in challenging moments, joy and togetherness can still find their way in.

“Being able to take the children out without worrying about the cost meant we could focus on having fun. There was so much laughing and although we were all tired when we got home, the day was brilliant. We still look back on the fun we had.”
