Lillian's story: place for peace

For the past seven years, Lillian’s life has been centred around her caring responsibilities, providing ongoing support for her elderly parent living with dementia. The demands of caring, combined with managing her own health challenges, have left her with little time to rest or focus on her own wellbeing. Day-to-day life has often felt overwhelming, with physical exhaustion and emotional strain intensified by the challenges of navigating statutory services. Like many carers, Lillian consistently placed the needs of the person she cares for above her own, which gradually led to burnout and fatigue.

Having put off taking time for herself, Lillian was encouraged to take a much-needed break to restore her wellbeing. She applied for a Time to Live microgrant which enabled her to take a 3-day break in a lodge with a friend.

“I had a few days away in a lodge, which gave me the time to reflect and recognise just how much of my life is taken up with providing support and care to my loved one.”

The timing of the break was crucial for Lillian as she was close to burnout. The stress was significantly affecting her mental health, and this break had a very positive impact.

“I enjoyed walking, reading, and simply taking things at my own pace. Being able to cook together and enjoy simple routines helped me put things into perspective. This break helped me feel appreciated and supported to take time out for myself.”

Although there may be future challenges, this short break gave Lillian the space to rest, reflect and regain her strength. It has helped her feel more resilient and better equipped to continue in her caring role, knowing the importance of taking time for her own wellbeing.

“I am so appreciative of the [Time to Live] microgrant support. In a demanding caring role, it’s easy to become consumed by the needs of others and neglect your own health and wellbeing.”
