Lucas' story: new adventures, new confidence

Lucas, an 11‑year‑old young carer, plays a crucial role in supporting his family. He helps care for his mum, who lives with significant mental health challenges and a physical disability that currently prevents her from working. Lucas also supports his younger brother and sister, helping them get ready for school and providing both emotional and practical help at home.

The family has been experiencing financial hardship, and as a result, they were unable to cover the cost of Lucas attending the Primary 7 residential trip - something he had been looking forward to for a long time, and which meant a great deal to him.

With support to apply for a Time to Live microgrant, Lucas was awarded funding that made it possible for him to take part. The grant covered the cost of the trip and provided suitable outdoor clothing, ensuring he could participate fully in every activity and feel included alongside his peers.

The experience had a profound impact on Lucas. He was able to enjoy new adventures, build friendships, and learn new skills in a safe and encouraging environment. Most importantly, the trip offered him a much‑needed break from his caring role a rare chance to simply be a child.

His mum spoke about the difference the trip has made:

“Without the support of the Time to Live fund, Lucas would have missed out on this important opportunity. Instead, he came home with wonderful memories, a sense of belonging, and renewed confidence.”
