Maeve's story: recharging by roller skating

Maeve is a young carer who lives with her mum. Her mum has a physical disability that affects her mobility and, more recently, has experienced challenges with her mental health. Maeve often worries about her mum and takes on caring responsibilities at home. Outside of attending school, opportunities to play and spend time with friends can be limited, as her mum is often unable to leave the house and support her activities.

During a young carers' club, Maeve spoke about some of the challenges she faces at home. A Time to Live microgrant was identified as the best support for Maeve, to help her access an activity she was passionate about. The grant enabled Maeve to attend a local roller skating session every fortnight and provided her with a new pair of roller skates. Her previous skates had become too small, meaning she could no longer enjoy the hobby she loved.  

"I love roller skating and the skates that I had were old and I'd outgrown them. Getting new skates and being able to go to the skating sessions with music was brilliant. I could skate to the music and really enjoy being out without worrying. I knew Mum was okay too." 

 Attending the roller skating sessions gave Maeve more than just a chance to take part in an activity she enjoyed. It provided her with regular opportunities to spend time with her peers, build confidence and simply enjoy being a child. Having a break from her caring role had a positive impact on her wellbeing, helping her feel happier, more relaxed and connected to friends.  

The grant made a real difference, allowing Maeve to continue doing something she loves while developing new skills and experiences. Through the support of the young carers' club and the microgrant, Maeve has been able to gain confidence, make positive memories and find freedom on her roller skates, knowing that both she and her mum are receiving the support they need.
