Mandy's story: creative rest
Mandy is the main carer for her two autistic children. Due to their additional care needs, Mandy is unable to work and often feels exhausted and isolated. Her caring role is highly demanding, leaving her very little time for herself. Like many carers, she regularly puts her own needs last.
During a conversation with her local carers' support organisation, Time to Live was discussed as a type of support Mandy could access from home. As she talked more, it became clear that she had a passion for arts and crafts. With this in mind, Mandy chose to use a Time to Live microgrant to buy diamond art supplies, model‑making materials, colouring books and pens.
For Mandy, having a break didn’t mean leaving her home - something that had always felt difficult. Spending even small pockets of time doing something she enjoys has helped Mandy reconnect with herself.
“I never thought I could have a break like this. I can take time for myself when the children are sleeping. I didn’t need to leave the house or be far from my kids. I was still close by if needed, but able to enjoy crafting at home.”
“Sometimes it’s easy to forget about yourself when you’re so focused on other people. Now I can see how important this time is it gives me the rest I need to face whatever comes next.”
Sharing some of her finished crafting projects online opened unexpected doors too.
“Posting my completed pieces on social media has broadened my horizons. Now I have people I can talk to as well.”
The Time to Live grant didn’t just provide materials; it gave Mandy moments of calm, creativity, and connection all from the comfort of her own home.

“Without the grant, I could not have purchased any of these items myself. My love of arts and crafts has allowed me to enjoy doing what I love.”
