Morag’s story: taking a break at the tearoom

Morag is a carer for her son, who has Fragile X syndrome. With help from her other son, she provides day-to-day care and support to her family. Over the past few years, Morag has faced numerous challenges. As well as managing her caring responsibilities, she has coped with family illness and the lasting effects of the COVID-19 lockdown. The cumulative impact of these experiences left her feeling isolated and had a significant effect on her mental health and wellbeing.

"Sometimes it feels so difficult, and it has felt like one thing after another."

Through support from her local carers' centre, Morag was offered two Time to Live vouchers to use at a local café or tearoom. The vouchers provided an opportunity for Morag and her children to enjoy a special outing together, away from the demands of everyday life. Morag chose to visit a local tearoom, where they spent time together enjoying lunch, tea and cakes in a welcoming setting.

"Getting this voucher was brilliant and a real treat."

What might seem like a simple outing became something much more meaningful. For Morag, it was an opportunity to step away from her usual routine to relax and focus on spending quality time with her children.

"These vouchers gave me such a boost and a break from the house. Me and the kids just had a lovely time. China cups, teapots and cakes. Glorious!"

Having the chance to spend time together away from their caring responsibilities helped strengthen the family's bond and reminded them of the importance of making time for enjoyment and connection.

"I am really so grateful for this voucher support through Time to Live. It may only look like a small thing, but for us it was enough and it really made me feel that we are a strong wee unit."

The Time to Live voucher gave Morag and her family the chance to take a break from routine, enjoy time together, and focus on the simple pleasures that can make such a difference. The support helped improve Morag's wellbeing and reminded her that caring for herself is just as important as caring for others.

"Thank you. I never thought that I could just have some time like this in a café, but I could, and I did and we all loved it!"
