Morven's story: short break in Belfast

Morven lives at home with her mum and elderly grandmother, who is currently recovering from surgery. Alongside her family responsibilities, she helps support her brother, who has Down syndrome and a learning disability.

As a young adult carer, Morven balances her caring role with college studies and the pressures of preparing for the future. In recent months, she had been working hard towards her exams while also thinking about her next steps into employment. Juggling these responsibilities alongside caring left her feeling tired and in need of a break.

During discussions at her local Young Adult Carers' Support Group, Morven spoke about her passion for science and travel. Although she was eager to have some time away, taking a break felt difficult and often seemed out of reach. With support from the group, Morven applied for a Time to Live microgrant, which enabled her to take a two-night trip to Belfast with her cousin.

The break gave Morven the opportunity to step away from her caring responsibilities and enjoy experiences that reflected her interests. During her time in Belfast, she visited the Titanic Experience, explored the W5 Science Centre and toured the city on an open-top bus.

The trip provided Morven with much-needed time to relax, have fun and focus on herself. It also gave her something positive to look forward to following a busy and demanding period of studying and caring.

As Morven navigates the transition into adulthood, balancing caring responsibilities with college and future employment aspirations, the break provided an important opportunity to build confidence, independence and resilience. The experience not only gave her a chance to recharge, but also helped her to see the value of taking time for herself. Returning home with happy memories and renewed energy, Morven felt better prepared to continue her studies, pursue her career ambitions and manage her caring role.
