Naomi's story: pottery and the creation of quality time
Naomi is an unpaid carer within the Traveller community. She provides support to her mother, who lives with fibromyalgia, asthma and diabetes, while also helping to care for her elderly uncle who has multiple sclerosis (MS). Alongside her caring responsibilities, Naomi looks after her husband and four children, including her eldest son, who is autistic. Balancing these responsibilities can be challenging and demanding, often leaving little time for herself.
"There are a lot of household tasks, including cooking and cleaning, as well as some personal support, helping Mum wash and dress. We work together, but there are times when I feel very tired and pulled in many different directions."
With support services in place for her family, Naomi was encouraged by her social worker to apply for a Time to Live microgrant. The funding was awarded to help Naomi access regular breaks from her caring role and focus on her own wellbeing. Naomi chose to use the grant to support her passion for pottery, a hobby she enjoys and finds deeply relaxing.
"The grant helped me buy some new pottery moulds, pottery tools and enough clay for a few months to support my hobby. It's the only time I have to myself where I can completely immerse myself in something and be creative. I can make lovely pottery pieces for myself and for families around me. It's great to see something you've created at the end of it."
The funding enabled Naomi to build on a creative hobby that she could enjoy from home, providing a valuable opportunity to step away from the pressures of caring. Pottery has become a positive outlet, helping to reduce stress, improve her mental wellbeing and create regular opportunities for rest and relaxation.
For Naomi, the Time to Live microgrant has been about more than purchasing materials. It has provided dedicated time for herself, helping her maintain her wellbeing while continuing in her caring role. The grant has shown how a small investment in a carer's wellbeing can have a lasting impact, helping Naomi find balance, creativity and respite alongside her many caring responsibilities.

"Having something that's just for me has made a real difference. Pottery helps me relax, clear my mind and focus on something positive. It gives me a chance to recharge so I can continue supporting the people I care for."
