Pamela’s story: family time at the zoo

Pamela is a single mum raising five children. While managing the household, she provides ongoing care for her 10-year-old twin sons, who both have significant physical and mental health challenges. She also cares for her 5-year-old daughter, who lives with chronic asthma.

Life at home is busy and requires constant planning. Each day revolves around meeting the children’s individual needs, with little time left for rest. Pamela’s two older children also support their siblings whenever they can. As a result, quality time together is rare.

“It’s busy at home and I try to spread my time between all the kids, but there are days when there is no more fuel in the tank. I’m exhausted and running on air. It would be great to treat the kids and have a break together so we can all remember we can still have fun.”

Pamela reached out for help while attending a young carers' support group with her two oldest children. Speaking with a support worker, she learned about the Time to Live fund and how it could offer her family a much-needed break from their caring responsibilities.

Although the idea of organising a day out for all five children felt overwhelming and financially out of reach, Pamela shared how much it would mean to spend quality time together as a family. With support from the carers' centre, Pamela accessed zoo vouchers through Time to Live, along with additional funding for the day. This made it possible for the whole family to visit the zoo - something that had once seemed impossible.

“I could never have done this myself because of the cost, but also the planning. Having zoo vouchers meant I didn’t have to worry about paying to get in. The extra support meant we could enjoy normal family activities, and I didn’t have to say "no" to everything. Thank you, this will stay with us for a long time. We’re all so grateful.”

This support had a lasting impact on Pamela and her family. It removed both financial and emotional barriers, making a full family day out achievable. The experience reduced stress, strengthened family bonds, and gave the children and Pamela the opportunity to enjoy positive, shared memories.
