Parker’s Story: a soundtrack to wellbeing
Parker is a young adult carer, supporting their mother who lives with fibromyalgia and mental health challenges. Balancing caring responsibilities alongside attending college throughout the week had become increasingly difficult. Daily routines were becoming more overwhelming, and Parker often felt isolated, struggling to concentrate on their coursework while managing responsibilities at home.
With the encouragement of a support worker, Parker began to open up about the pressures they were facing and the importance of having some time for themselves. During these conversations, Parker shared their love of music, as well as their interest in podcasts and audiobooks. They also spoke about how music was something both them and their mum enjoyed and could share together.
It was agreed that a Time to Live microgrant could support Parker to create meaningful moments of rest and connection at home. With the grant, Parker purchased an Echo Dot and a pair of AirPods. This meant they could listen to music together with their mum, while also having the freedom to use headphones for studying, relaxing or taking a break.
“This break was worked around what really meant the most to me, and something I could fit around my life. I’ve listened to a few podcasts when I am studying, and I love to listen to audiobooks when I am relaxing in my room too, so that has been great for me.”
The impact extended beyond Parker individually. The Echo Dot allowed their mum to access music and radio independently, helping her feel more relaxed and less isolated, especially when Parker was at college.
The Time to Live microgrant has had a meaningful impact on both Parker and their mum. It has helped reduce feelings of isolation, supported Parker’s ability to focus on their studies, and created opportunities for rest and self-care within a busy caring role. At the same time, it has strengthened the relationship between Parker and their mum through shared moments of enjoyment and conversation.

“The Echo Dot has been great for me, and Mum too. When I am at college, Mum can listen to the radio or a playlist, which helps her relax. We also have more to talk about at dinnertime.”
