Raymond’s story: greenhouse retreat
Raymond is the main carer for his wife, who lives with multiple sclerosis. Together, they are managing well and maintaining their independence, although they are aware that their needs may increase over time. As an older carer, Raymond’s role can be both physically and emotionally demanding, and the day-to-day responsibilities can be tiring.
After discussions about support options, Raymond chose to use a Time to Live microgrant to purchase a wooden greenhouse for his garden, creating a space where he could rest while remaining close to his wife.
“The greenhouse means that I can rest and relax in the garden while staying close by so that I can still help my wife. It gives me a sense of independence, as well as a comfortable place to sit, read, and plan my garden. I’ve got my radio in there too, so it really is my home from home. When I close the door, it feels like I’ve stepped away and when I open [the greenhouse], that’s my break starting.”
Through this simple but meaningful support, Raymond has been able to build regular moments of rest into his routine, helping him to maintain his wellbeing while continuing caring for his wife.

“Rain, hail or shine, I can use my greenhouse to take time out. It’s good to have some time to myself and a regular pause in things. It reduces my anxiety and eases feelings of guilt, as I don’t need to leave my wife to have a break.”
