Remi’s story: strength in song

Remi is a full‑time carer for their partner, who lives with the long‑term effects of a stroke and other health complications. Their partner can become easily confused, and the caring role is constant: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Remi supports every aspect of daily life, and over time the emotional and physical demands began to take a toll. Stress was becoming a significant factor, affecting Remi’s own health and mental wellbeing.

Through support sessions and conversations, Remi shared their lifelong passion for singing. With encouragement and practical help to make sure their partner would be supported in their absence, Remi applied for a Time to Live microgrant to attend the International Summer School for Singers.

This short break meant being away for a few days, giving Remi a rare opportunity to focus on something that brought them joy.

Reflecting on the experience, Remi said:

“It was just marvellous. I felt my voice improve and it made me feel so much better. I loved meeting other like‑minded people, some of whom were also carers like me, so they truly understood.”

“No matter how difficult things are at home, I will always remember this break. I sing at home now with a huge smile - it gets me through the tougher times.”
