Richard’s story: a recipe for respite

Richard is a long-term unpaid carer for his partner, who has a physical disability. Alongside his caring role, he also works and over time this combination became emotionally and physically exhausting. With very little time left for himself, Richard found it difficult to take part in activities outside of home.

During a conversation with staff at his local carers' centre, Richard spoke about his passion for cooking. Cooking at home gave him a sense of relaxation and enjoyment, particularly reading cookery books, planning meals, and being creative in the kitchen.

With encouragement and support, Richard used a Time to Live microgrant to enrol in a cookery course for a few hours each week over a 12‑week period. On the evenings of the course, another family member stayed with his partner, allowing Richard to fully engage and look forward to that dedicated time for himself.

“The course gave me time to think and lots of new ideas, as I really love cooking. It was great to meet new people and to have something positive to look forward to each week. Having time away from my normal routine made a huge difference.”

The opportunity gave Richard more than just new cooking skills; it provided meaningful respite and a chance to reconnect with something he enjoys.

“Thanks to Time to Live, I was able to take the break that meant the most to me and the best part is that I can share these lovely dishes with my partner too.”
