Rosemary's story: weaving joy

Rosemary struggled to find opportunities to take meaningful breaks that worked around her circumstances. During conversations with her Carer Support Worker, she spoke about her love of tapestry weaving and how it provided a rare opportunity to relax and focus on herself. However, the loom she owned was old and becoming difficult to use, limiting her ability to enjoy the hobby that brought her so much comfort.

Encouraged to think about what a break could look like for her, Rosemary applied to Time to Live for a microgrant. The grant enabled her to purchase a tabletop tapestry loom and a selection of yarns, giving her the tools she needed to continue a hobby that supports her wellbeing.

The impact of the grant has been significant. Having a hobby that fits around her caring role means Rosemary can take regular short breaks without worrying about being too far from her partner. The creative process gives her something positive to focus on, helping her unwind and recharge.

Working on tapestry projects has become a valuable source of relaxation, creativity and self-care. The ability to plan designs, experiment with colours and watch projects come to life has had a positive effect on her mental health and overall wellbeing.

"Planning projects and choosing colours is relaxing. Sitting in the garden with a coffee and chatting with my partner is relaxing and therapeutic for us both. My partner is happy because I am happy, and seeing the projects come to life is so exciting. I'm currently working on a 'Heather and Hills' wall hanging inspired by the Scottish landscape, and I'm already planning my next project: a table runner."

For Rosemary, the microgrant offered much more than a new loom. It provided a practical way to take breaks that worked around her caring responsibilities, allowing her to prioritise her own wellbeing while remaining close to the person she cares for. The result has been greater resilience, improved mental health and renewed enjoyment in an activity she loves.

"I've been able to enjoy tapestry projects while still being close by, if I'm needed. As the loom is tabletop, I can use it in the garden or in the house, which is great because I can choose where I want to spend my break."
