Sarah's story

"I care for my 5-year-old son, who has been diagnosed with autism and reflux.

It’s 24-hour care. He has sleep issues, so you don’t get enough sleep. It’s a hectic role, not only on the emotional side of things but physically as well.

If the Art Workshop weren’t there, I wouldn’t have stopped. Most of my artworks are unfinished, but regardless I feel liberated. I used to be an art student, but my poor health and caring role kept me away. It was nice to reconnect with art and other adults. This made me feel confident in myself and helped me find my identity again. As a carer, you lose your identity; you feel like all you’re doing is looking after somebody else. This break gave me two hours to myself. You can do something for yourself. I feel I can stand a little bit taller now."

Sarah accessed a short break through Play-Sense Play Group & School Holiday Project, funded by the Better Breaks programme.
