Shared Laughter with Shared Lives Day Support
Liam visits Shared Lives carer, James, at his home, every Wednesday for day support. James has been matched with Liam, who has a learning disability, for 6 years.
The pair credit the longevity of their friendship to the matching process by Moray Shared Lives. Liam and James have a similar sense of humour and enjoy crafts, exploring the local area and having a laugh together.
When together, new skills are learnt, such as cooking, working with others and Liam is given the opportunity to express himself creatively.
Liam has explored his passion for HGVs, developed his artistic side (something he needed support with initially) and has become more confident. They have travelled far and wide on public transport, visiting local landmarks, enjoying walks together and even had a tour round a RNLI lifeboat.
Day Support with Shared Lives enables Liam to “get out of the house”, build friendships and develop new skills and interests, all with the supported of his constant, trusted Shared Lives carer and friend, James.
Shared Lives schemes across Scotland provide short breaks and day support (as well as a place to live) for people with a range of support needs, including learning and physical disabilities, those living with mental ill health, dementia, a support need relating to old age or Autism. Each person is matched with an assessed and trained Shared Lives carer they choose to spend their time with, meaning a real friendship can develop between the two families. Breaks are flexible and can range from a few hours to an extended holiday stay.
